National Botanical Garden of Wales

The Garden of Wales is the first national botanic garden to be created in the United Kingdom for over 200 years. It is also an exciting new institution for Wales which aims to heighten visitors' awareness and understanding of the natural and manmade world. It is a place of international significance dedicated to conservation, horticulture, science, education, leisure and the arts.

As a landmark Millennium project, the Garden of Wales links the history of the last millennium with the present. It is set in the former 18th century regency park of Middleton Hall in Carmarthenshire, a 568 acre estate on the edge of the Tywi valley. The Garden enjoys a pollution free environment, spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and a rich cultural heritage.

The Tywi Valley held a secret in the heart of its beautiful landscape for centuries. Time, nature and agriculture had almost obliterated the ruins of a grand 18th century garden. The Middleton Estate had once been meticulously maintained but it had become a puzzle of stone fragments, twisted tree roots and sinuous ivy. Walled gardens that once protected an abundance of vegetables and exotic fruits now enclosed rough pasture and weeds. The estate's magnificent system of lakes had been drained and became boggy, impenetrable thickets. Elaborate water systems and roaring cascades had been silenced by a hundred years of neglect. The story of its restoration began in the unlikeliest of circumstances - a ramble in the woods, a chance encounter and a conversation with a passionate artist with an inquisitive eye.

Explore the Garden and find out more about the history, sights, sounds and scents of this spectacular re-interpretation of the historical garden, blending the breathtaking design of Norman Foster's Great Glasshouse with the careful restoration of the historic double walled garden.
