The Welsh National is one of the feature races of the National Hunt season. The race is sponsored by Corals and is know also as the Coral Welsh National. The Welsh National takes place the day after boxing day each year so as not to clash with the King George at Kempton Park.
The Welsh National is the first of the Grand Nationals of the season. It is run very early in the season with the other three major Nationals, the Grand National at aintree, the Irish National at Fairyhouse in Ireland and the Scottish National at Ayr all taking place at the end of the season.
The Welsh National history goes back to 1895 when it was first run and the Chepstow racecourse took over the running of the Coral Welsh National in 1948.
