Hotels in Powys
Powys is a land of rolling hills and remote moorland - a gentle landscape that is often undervalued in comparison to its much-vaunted neighbours of Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons.
Powys is split by the courses of three major rivers, the Severn, Wye and Usk, that flow from west to east across the county, while the Brecon Beacons form a natural border to the south. There are large areas of unspoilt natural beauty, which are both lonely and peaceful.
The wild mountains and exposed hills in the north and west of the county contrast sharply with the calm, flat river plains in the east. As the rivers meander towards the sea they create shingle banks, oxbow lakes and mires, all places rich in wildlife and vulnerable to damage. The valleys of the Tanat, Vyrnwy and upper Wye, Usk and Severn are home to the lesser horseshoe bat. This rare species feeds on the well-wooded flood plains of the valleys. It makes its bed for the winter in disused mines and breeds as a non-paying guest in houses and barns.
